INTRODUCTION

SIC (Italian Cancer Society), founded in 1952, is the longest-lived national association dedicated to cancer research in Italy. It counts over 800 members, with a strong component of young researchers and students as affiliates.

SIC focuses on experimental, translational and clinical oncology, helping to develop different aspects of these fields, by stimulating interactions between preclinical and clinical investigators and propelling the transfer of knowledge from bench to the bedside, as well as by establishing relations with similar international associations. The Society particularly encourages national cancer research in Italy, by supporting young researchers. To this aim, a Young Investigators group has been created in 2006, to implement the participation of young scientists to the Society.

An important event is the organization of the national annual meeting of the Society. The 64th SIC annual meeting will take place in the beautiful and historic location of the University of Milan, on September 25-27th 2024, and will have as focus: “Science-driven approaches to achieve early diagnosis of cancer and to overcome therapy resistance”. We expect the participation of more than 300 attendants among scientists and oncologists.

Experts in the field of pre-clinical and clinical oncology coming from all over the world will meet in Milan to discuss and present novel insights into both basic molecular mechanisms of cancer occurrence and progression as well as translational studies aimed at validating early diagnostic and/or predictive biomarkers. The main topics of the different scientific sessions will be:

  1. new drugs taking advantage of vulnerability of tumor cells as PARPi, with proven efficacy in ovarian, breast and prostate cancer
  2. immuno-conjugates at high specificity and efficacy, able to overcome mechanism of resistance under development for breast, ovarian, lung cancer and hematological malignancies
  3. relevance of metabolism, diet and microbioma in responsiveness to conventional therapies and immunotherapies; 4) novel immunotherapeutic approaches and combinations
  4. novel biomarkers and liquid biopsies to monitor evolution and personalize the therapeutic strategy, for instance for lung and gastro-intestinal tumors
  5. novel approaches for a non-invasive early diagnosis.

The conference will include main lectures as well as poster presentations and discussions.

The Prof. Giorgio Prodi prize will be awarded to an outstanding italian scientist, internationally recognized for the achievements obtained during her/his career and for the remarkable contribution to cancer research, selected by the SIC Scientific Committee.

To promote a large participation of young scientists, several awards will be assigned for poster presentation and discussions, as well as prizes for best manuscripts published during the previous year and a number of fellowships to contribute to the meeting attendance. Notably, the 2024 meeting will host a remarkable number of speakers from different european and american Institutions.
